Non is forced to leave her dystopic world and her fractured family, for undisclosed reasons, to flee with her 'Taid' - Welsh for grandfather. At first they do not know where they are going or why. Hiding in broken down buildings, living on next to nothing, they eventually discover a community of gifted men and women who can help.
Non finds her lifelong companion and learns that she is the 'Expected One', the fulfilment of a prophecy made hundreds of years ago. She spends many years undergoing a transformation from a sulky, negative school girl who is incapable of thinking, into a young woman who is beginning to understand the future that she must face.
After time spent with a strange individual who teaches her advanced survival techniques, and with her education completed, Non is prepared to return to her world.
